New Members + Solar TX

ECOS Club,

We received 22 new members through the Activity Mart, so WELCOME, new greenies, to the ECOS Club! Please make sure to check out our blog at https://ecosclub.wordpress.com to learn more about us (it has pictures, past events, minutes and all of our e-mails!).

Our regularly scheduled meetings are normally on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday, from 1PM-2PM, but we’ve made a club decision to actually do most of our work through e-mail. We’ll be still doing events, but instead of having a meeting to talk about upcoming events, we will mostly be sending out e-mails and updating the blog regarding it. We welcome your input on this change, of course! What this boils down to is: If we have any meetings, we will e-mail you first to let you know about the change, but until then, our regularly scheduled meetings are discontinued.

We also recently created a group with erideshare to help faciliate the carpooling effort on campus. That group is http://lscmontgomery.erideshare.com/ In order to post something, you must create an account with erideshare (it’s free and they do not spam). Whenever you click the link, “Post your carpool offer/request” it asks for a group password at the end of the form. That password is abc123$

We recently got an e-mail from a Josh Freiman,

I am trying to help get petition postcards sent and phone calls made to Gov. Rick Perry to support a new solar energy initiative. Unfortunately, a lot of the organzing goes on down in Houston, but I think there is some untapped local interest here in Montgomery County. I hoped that you and other members of the MOCO-ECO organization might consider adopting this environmental cause and maybe spending some time trying to get students at Lone Star college to sign on.
Here’s a link to the campaign website: www.gosolartexas.org
I hope you all consider getting involved with me, and I look forward to hearing back from you. You can reach me by email or phone at 713-775-7688.

If anyone is interested in getting involved with this campaign please go ahead and contact him and check out the website.

That’s all for now, but stay turned for information on the butt-out (cigarette clean-up) date with Keep TX Beautiful and our video skit!

Activity Mart + Minutes

ECOS Club,

We need some members to sit down at our booth at the Activity Mart in February, so here’s the information about when it happens:
The activity mart will be held between 11AM-2PM in Building A in the commons on Wednesday, February 3rd and Thursday, February 4th. I will be there both days from 1PM-2PM and Professor Devoley will be there 11AM-1PM on Thursday and for some of Wednesday, also. This is big for us each semester, because it’s how we get new members and get the word out about us! We’ll be passing out information about us and what we stand for. Please get back with us if you’re able to sit down at the booth, even for just 30 minutes or a hour. The more students involved, the better! We’ll have a full table display.

We will NOT have a meeting the week of the Activity Mart.

What time is good for everyone to meet? If you have a specific time on Monday or Wednesday that you can meet once or twice a month for the club, please e-mail me or Professor Devoley that information. Again, my e-mail is crystal.l.lovelady@lonestar.edu.

We discussed a couple events at the meeting. March and April both have big events (Spring Fling, Earth Day, our big speaker!). These events are further on down the line, so for now we’ll talk about February!
  • We would like to film a short skit for an elementary school 2nd grade class on littering. This will be very DIY, and mostly just be a few of us getting together and filming with a flip camera (which I can provide and do the editing for). It’ll take place on campus. We’ll have Professor Devoley be the angry Recycle Police that yells at us, so it should be a laugh! Let me know if you’re interested in being a part of the video.
  • Camping. Who wants to do it on a weekend at the Huntsville State Park? They have horseback riding, canoeing, hiking, mountain bike trails – it’s ECOS heaven on Earth!
  • Butt-out! We’ll be contacting Keep TX Beautiful and give you details when we hear more news, but we’ll be doing a cigarette butt clean-up soon, as well as  HWY clean-up. It’s a great way to really show what we’re about to the campus and community. Look out for our blog and e-mails for an update on the where and when!

That’s all for now, green cadets! As always…

Stay Green,

Pay it Forward Carnations.

This week was finals week, and ECOS decided to help de-stress LSC students by handing out carnations. We attached a small tag with a bird on it that stated, “Pay it Forward – ECOS”. The idea was to bring a smile to as many stressed students as possible, and hope they then forward the flower to someone else to cheer them up as well. We received 50 carnations and ran out of them with in less than a hour. We also had candy canes donated to us by Janet from Student Activities, and we’re still giving those out to students in the testing center and ELC.

What you missed…

 Hello ECOS Club members!

We had a meeting on October 13th behind A-102 and discussed several topics the club has been working on. Before I discuss the minutes, are any club members available to attend the SGA meetings as a representative on behalf of ECOS? If so, please reply to this e-mail to Professor Devoley and let him know.

 What you missed,…

 Fall Family Fun Festival:

The Festival is definitely on! We will be facepainting and hopefully selling organic chocolate and coffee. Can anyone make it to volunteer a couple hours that day? It is on Saturday, November 21st, from 10AM -2PM.

 Recycling Video:

We’re going to try to have ECOS collaborate with the Green Team on the video.

 T-Shirts:

We’ve been active for many years, and t-shirts are a great way for members to show their support for ECOS. We’ve decided that a DIY approach is the best way to represent the club. Of course, feel free to purchase any ‘green’ wear and put an ECOS tag on it. We know that many of you don’t have a lot of money to spend on a shirt, so they aren’t required to make or buy. We’re trying to work on getting some basic shirts from the college, and finding patches for our club members to use. Any plain shirt will do, though. Another great idea is to use acryclic paint and stencils when making shirts. Jessica Johnson, Vice President of Marketing, had a good idea to put a footprint on the back of t-shirts as a ‘carbon footprint’. To do this we could paint our foot with acrylic paint and just press it on the back of the shirt. If anyone has plain t-shirts or LSC shirts they would like to do this to, bring it to the next meeting and several of us can go ahead and put a footprint on our shirts. Acrylic paint is great for adding designs, so get creative! I’ll bring a few paints to the next meeting for members to use on their shirts if they have them.

 Speaker:

We have a new speaker who we’re trying to collaborate with who works for the city of Houston with Mayor White. We’re still working out the details, but she gave a really great speech at Professor Devoley’s church on the process of recycling. We’ll keep you updated when we have the dates done!

E.C.O.S. Texas Recycle Day Was a SUCCESS!!

But, don’t worry! We still have one more day to go!!

Our Student Government Representative, Leah, handing out flyers.

We handed out lots of information about recycling, PETA, and how to improve our environment. Delicious vegan chocolate chip cookie and brownie samplers were available, as well as regular lemon white chocolate chip cookies. We also had awesomely scrumptious humus on pita bread.

Our adviser, Mike Devoley, posing with Willie Nelson.

We also provided inexpensive water bottles (only 5 bucks!) of every single colour imaginable. There was no end to the all-day fun!

Our vice-president, Sheela, helping a student sign his Recycle Pledge

Free food and information was offered to anyone, but extras was given to those who signed a Recycle Pledge, promising to reduce, reuse, and recycle more often! We had a sign in sheet available. There were also extra credit flyers that were passed out to all psychology students of Prof. Devoley!

You may have missed today, but don’t miss out on the fun tomorrow!!!! We will be set outside in the same place on the 18th as well! Don’t miss it! We will part of the registration blitz fun! Come join us!
